Rulers and Chieftains of the Chib Rajputs — Bhimber State (1531–1847)

Rulers and Chieftains of the Chib Rajputs — Bhimber State (1531–1847)

1. Raja Shadab Khan

Raja Shadab Khan (Raja Shadi Khan) was the first ruler of the Bhimber State. He was a contemporary and jagirdar during the reigns of Emperor Babur, Humayun, and Akbar. He ruled the present-day districts of Bhimber and Noshera for more than 50 years.

Raja Shadab Khan was a dignified, powerful, and brave warrior. Emperor Akbar entrusted him with the campaign to conquer Kandahar, which he successfully accomplished. Pleased with his success, Akbar bestowed upon him the title of “Raja Shadab Khan” and appointed him Governor of Kashmir.

In the later years of his life, he became a saintly figure and attained spiritual distinction. He handed over his state to his son, Raja Suleman Khan. His shrine is located near Mirpur–Palmeri Road, where hundreds of devotees visit daily.

2. Raja Suleman Khan

Raja Suleman Khan succeeded his father. He focused on the training and reorganization of the army and devoted his time to the welfare of his people. Remaining away from active politics, he managed the affairs of the state.

After his death, his son, Raja Sultan Khan, became the ruler.

3. Raja Sultan Khan

Raja Sultan Khan initially formed an alliance with Maharaja Ranjit Singh, but this relationship did not last long. The Maharaja sought military assistance from Raja Sultan Khan to capture a region of Kashmir, which Raja Sultan Khan personally led.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his sons, Dhian Singh and Gulab Singh, became fearful of this strong force and adopted treacherous measures against Raja Sultan Khan. Eventually, Raja Sultan Khan’s army was destroyed, and he himself was martyred at the hands of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. After him, his son, Raja Faiz Talib, became the ruler.

4. Raja Faiz Talib Khan

Raja Faiz Talib Khan was the last ruler of the Bhimber State. After his father’s death, he faced numerous challenges. During the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the Bhimber State was merged into Kashmir.

This merger was finalized in 1847 through Sir Henry Lawrence between the British Government and the Maharaja of Kashmir. The British Government decided that any Chib Rajput chieftain who settled in British territories would be granted a permanent pension. Raja Faiz Talib later settled in Shahdara, Lahore.

5. Raja Fazal Dad Khan

Raja Fazal Dad Khan was the first chieftain of the Chib Rajputs and the son of Raja Faiz Talib Khan. He served in the army but resigned due to health issues. Owing to his passion for hunting, he settled in Syedpur, Jhelum.

After his death, the permanent family pension was transferred to his son, Raja Ali Bahadur Khan.

6. Raja Ali Bahadur Khan

Raja Ali Bahadur Khan was the next chieftain of the Chib Rajputs. He received the family pension and was appointed Commissioner of the Rawalpindi Division. After retiring from service, he settled in Jhelum and was buried in 1908 in his family graveyard near the river.

7. Raja Muhammad Akbar Khan

Khan Bahadur Raja Muhammad Akbar Khan was born in 1870. He received the family pension. After his father’s death in 1908, he obtained a commission in the Revenue Department but later resigned due to his father’s health concerns. The British Government awarded him the title of “Khan Bahadur” and appointed him as an Honorary Magistrate in Jhelum District.

8. Major (Retd.) Raja Muhammad Afzal Khan

Major Muhammad Afzal Khan was born in 1905. He received his education from Chiefs’ College Lahore and obtained a commission as a Tehsildar in the Revenue Department. Later, in 1938, he joined the Indian Army and served in the 5th Horse Cavalry.

In 1939, he was sent to Singapore and spent four and a half years as a Japanese prisoner of war. After 20 years of military service, he settled in Jhelum and was buried in the family graveyard in 1990.

9. Brigadier (Retd.) Raja Muhammad Saleem Khan
